Dog DNA Test / What Kind of Dog do I Have?

If you have a mixed breed dog, then you probably have wondered at one time or another, just exactly what that mix may be.  Possessing this information could be highly beneficial for multiple reasons, whether it be for insight into health issues, breed specific training techniques, understanding of temperament, or simple curiosity.  There are a few ways you can go about determining your dog’s genealogy.  The first, and most accurate, would be to have a company conduct a dog DNA test.  The second, and likely the least accurate, would be to pick apart your dog’s characteristics and come up with the closest match on your own.

Dog DNA tests:

There are many companies that offer dog DNA testing, most commonly done with a cheek swab sampling, and can accurately identify the majority of breeds within your dog.  However, beware, because if your dog is mixed with too many breeds the test may become less accurate and unable to determine all of the breeds.  Cost will run approximately $60.00 and up and kits are available online, or at pet supply retail stores.

Determine your dog’s mix on your own:

This would require picking apart your dog’s traits and narrowing down the breed possibilities by considering your dogs overall size, ear shape, fur color/texture, tail size, presence of any blue/black tongue, temperament, etc.  You can see where this method may be difficult for those that are not experts in the area of dog breeds!  But, it’s worth a try if you’re not willing to dish out the cash for DNA testing, and may be fun in the process.

If all else fails, just love your dog for who he is, after all that is what they do for us!

If you have a Poodle mix dog, and aren’t sure what else the mix may be, post a picture here. Maybe others can help you decide!

We got this little girl as a rescue pup two weeks ago…she is supposed to be a poodle terrier mix, but I haven’t figured out what kind of terrier. He coat is very soft, and not as dense as many poodles, just light fluff. Her legs are longer than my Westie’s, the pads of each foot are black. She’s the height of our Westie, weighs 8.5 lbs and is almost 4 months old. Thank you!

This beautiful girl was adopted from an animal shelter at 9 months old who said she was turned in from a breeder/ puppy mill. I was told she was a labradoodle but think she may be something else. We think she looks more like a wavy haired portugese water dog or a whoodle (soft wheatan terrier and standard poodle mix). She is about 49 lbs, hair is about 5 inches long, a short tail, webbed paws and LOVES water whether a bath or the beach. The vet is unsure but says he sees some afghan in her.

Our pup who we just got a few days ago is 3 months old and was sold to us as a “hybrid” poodle mix. Can anyone help us to identify what the “mix” part is? Now I need to figure out how to post a pic.

My little guy is now seven and about 12 pounds. I gave him a DNA test, and it came back as poodle/ mini-Pincsher mix when he was 1 years old and I rescued him. I’m still not convinced to this day though about the mini-Pinscher. I just don’t see it. His limbs are so long, and his hair is so creamy/ his whiskers near his nose grow quite long. Any other ideas? I love my little guy and would love to solve this mystery. Thanks!

I had a bichon frise mix and both of these dogs (Photo #1 & Photo #2) look like they could be a mix of that and poodle.
