Bassetoodle (also known as Bassetdoodle)

A Bassetoodle is a mix between a Basset Hound and a Poodle.  They are a medium sized dog, that stands long, and low, to the ground.  They weigh anywhere from 22 – 30 pounds, and approximately 12 – 13 inches tall.  Their appearance is much closer to that of the basset hound than the poodle.  Like the basset hound, they tend to howl more than they bark, and also may have a tendency to wander off after a scent if you don’t keep an eye on them.  They are funny little mischief makers in the way that they are very curious about everything and will get into anything you may happen to leave laying around, if given the chance.  They are generally easy to train, however, they can be a little stubborn and may require a firm, authoritative training style.  They are a loving, happy, and silly animal that is ideal for just about anyone wishing to have a friendly and faithful companion.  They are wonderful for families, and get along very well with children.  They are not an overly energetic dog that will run you ragged trying to get them adequately exercised either.  Due to the inherited calmness of the basset hound, a simple walk, or play session, each day will suite them just fine.

When considering the nature of the Bassetoodle, you must consider the characteristics of both the Basset Hound and the Poodle separately in order to determine the characteristics the Bassetoodle may exhibit.  The below paragraphs explore these two breeds:

Basset Hound

The Basset Hound is a serene, and well-behaved dog, but can be stubborn if spoiled too much. Try not to spoil them though, and see if you succeed!   With their charming sense of humor, friendly demeanor, and  long, silly ears they are hard to resist.  They are also very calm, and gentle in nature, and are great for those seeking a family dog.  They love their families, thrive on human companionship, and have an amusing deep, rolling bark.  They have a tendency to run if let loose, so leashing or keeping them fenced is very important.  They are scent hounds so following the scent of prey is quite common in this breed.  Although sometimes labeled as not being all that intelligent, don’t let them fool you, they tend to be stubborn more than anything else, and a tasty treat may suddenly have them appearing smarter than ever.  The average life span of the basset hound is 12 years.

Poodle

The Poodle comes in three different sizes, toy (10” and under, 6-9 1bs.), miniature (10-15”, 15-17 1bs.), and standard (over 15”, 45-70 1bs.).  The Poodle has been cited as being the 2nd most intelligent breed of dog.  Their exceptional intelligence, paired with the fact that they are generally very eager to please, empowers them to excel in obedience training.  They learn quickly and will delight in showing off their new tricks.  Poodles are generally very easy to housebreak.  They are loyal and devoted companions, extremely people-oriented, and crave lots of love and attention.  They are typically calm, good natured, with a sweet temperament, and the ability to bond with all members of their human family.  The standard poodle, in particular, does extremely well in families with young children, while the toy and miniatures fair better with older children.  Poodles do not do well in households where they will be left alone for long periods of time, left outside, or bound to one room of the house.  Poodles have an extremely low-shedding, dense coat which is either curly or corded and should be groomed every 6 – 8 weeks to prevent mats and tangles.  If you should so decide, their coat can also be kept short for low-maintenance.  Poodles come in a variety of colors such as silver, cream, gray, blue, black, white, apricot, red, caf-au-lait, brown, and parti-colored.  The Poodle is oftentimes referred to as the hypo-allergenic dog.  But, while there truly is no such thing as a completely hypo-allergenic dog, they are unquestionably more compatible with allergic persons than other breeds.   Being classified as highly energetic, the poodle, like most dogs, will appreciate daily exercise, such as a walk, play session, or a run at the dog park.

My bassetoodle is a naughty mischievous little boy, and a thief. He loves rolling in mud, chasing stuff, and is extremely stubborn. He has long shaggy fur that needs regular trimming or he looks like a hairy monster.

He won’t come when he is called unless he is ready to, and has eaten numerous shoes, coathangers and remote controls. He steals my things and leaves them strewn around the garden. He is a rubbish guard dog and rolls over for tummy tickles from anyone he meets. He loves swimming and is happy to jump in the bath or shower either alone or with a human. (ME) He hogs the sofa and thinks my bed is his.

Right now he also smells bad (post walk and pre bath)

Would I swap him? You bet I would……

This is my basset-hound poodle: Vinnie. He is 9 and the best dog ever!

This is a picture taken after we put him in a pond. He hates swimming and can’t swim. Poor stubby legs.

I hope you found one, I got by baby as a companion for my Golden. Stanley (bassetoodle), was a mistake and the neighbors don’t speak to each other to this day. The story… Basset in one yard large poodle in other yard!! Say no more, my Stanley. We call him a ninja because he takes things like beer coolers, sun glasses and car keys! He loves to throw things in the air and play like crazy… running as fast as he can under bushes and around the yard, for about 10 minutes a day and that is it! Rest of the day he looks half dead. The only problem (and it’s a real problem) is his smell and skin allergies. My poor baby is miserable sometimes:(. I love him, smells and allergies! He hates water but, requires a bath weekly. I’ve used Epson salt, vinegar, oatmeal, olive oil, coconut oil … hundreds of dollars spent at vet to no avail. He lets me try to help him…. that’s what I love about him. Sweet, sweet dog.
